A Table Made a Snare and a Trap Romans 11:9

Paul the apostle referred to Isaiah's words as he told the people in Rome, “it is written, God has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day”, and in chapter eleven and verse nine of Romans, Paul referred to King David's words as he told the people in Rome, “let their table be made a snare, and a trap” where we read:

And David says, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap,
and a stumbling-block, and a recompense unto them:
The verse begins, And David says, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, ...Paul began with the words, “and David” which refers to “the second king of Israel and ancestor of Jesus Christ whose name means beloved” “says” or “utters, proclaims and declares”, “let” or “allow and permit” “their table” which means “the people who have a spirit of slumber to have a place where they sit or where food is set” “be made” or “to be formed and fashioned” “a snare” which means “toward a trap or noose which brings peril, loss and destruction”, “and a trap” or “a hunting of wild beasts to destroy them”. Paul shared how David desired for those who were “blind and deaf” to have where they “eat and drink” to become as a “perilous noose” that brings them “loss”.

The verse goes on to say, ... and a stumbling-block, and a recompense unto them:. Paul added the words, “and a stumbling-block” which means “a movable stick or trigger of a trap which entraps a person”, “and a recompense” or “and a thing paid back or requital” “unto them” which means “toward those who were given a spirit of slumber”. Paul shared David's desire to have these obstinate ones to receive a “moveable stick to a trap” which would be a “requital” to them.

When we meditate upon these words of Paul, we see his reference to Psalm chapter sixty-nine and verse twenty-three where David wrote, “Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.” People who reject God's “good news” are subject to receive the “recompense” of their decision. Rather than receiving Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they refuse to accept Him, and therefore are exposed to a “snare and a trap”.

Next time Paul tells his readers how “let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
