Paul
the apostle referred to the Old Testament book of Isaiah as he wrote,
“Isaiah
also cried concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of
Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved”,
and in
chapter nine and verse twenty-eight of Romans,
Paul continued his thought as he told his readers in Rome, “he
will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness”
where
we read:
For
he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness:
because
a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
The
verse begins, “
For
he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness:”
Paul
began with the words, “for
he will finish”
which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore God will bring to an end, conclude and complete” “the
work”
or “the decree, mandate, order and moral precepts”,
“and
cut it short”
which means “and dispatch briefly, execute or finish quickly” “in
righteousness”
which means “in the state of him who is as he ought to be,
righteousness and the condition acceptable to God ”. Paul referred
to Isaiah once again as he shared how God will “quickly” complete
His “decrees” so they will be “in the state they ought to be”.
The
verse continues, “because
a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.”
Paul
added the word, “because”
which means “since” “a
short work”
or “a dispatch briefly which is executed, mandated and ordered
decree, mandate, order and moral precepts” “will
the Lord”
which refers to “shall he to whom a person or thing belongs, about
which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the
Messiah”
“make”
or “produce, provide and render” “on
the earth”
which means “the arable and main land as opposed to the sea or
water”. Paul repeated how God's “work
upon the earth”
would be completed in a brief manner.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we see how God is able to
“complete” His work quickly “upon
the earth”.
Though it may seem like a long time for us, the Lord is executing His
will in brief fashion. Second Peter chapter three and verse eight
declares, “beloved,
be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is
with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day”,
and through this we learn God does not measure time in the same
manner as we. His salvation plan through His Son Jesus Christ is
brief, and those who are wise will adhere to His “invitation” to
know Him and inherit “eternal life”. Those who are unwise should
remember, God will “finish”
His work, and His time to do so is “short”.
Next
time we
see Paul tell his readers what would have happened,
“except
the Lord of Sabbath had left a seed”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
