Paul
the apostle asked the people in Rome how God,
“What
if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known,
endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to
destruction”,
and he added, “And
that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of
mercy, which he had before prepared unto glory”.
In
chapter nine and verse twenty-four of Romans,
Paul continued his thought as he questioned his readers about the
“called,
not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”
where
we read:
Even
us, whom he has called, not of the Jews only, but also of the
Gentiles?
The
verse begins, “Even
us, whom he has called, not of the Jews only, ...”
Paul
began with the words, “even
us”
which means “also and indeed Paul, his companions and his readers”
“whom
he has called” which
means “who are the people God has bid and invited” “not
of the Jews”
or “not pertaining to people belonging to the Jewish nation as
respects to birth, origin or religion” “only”
or “solely and alone”. Paul shared haw God “bid and invited”
Paul, his companions and his believing readers who belonged not only
to the Jewish nation.
The
verse continues, “...
but
also of the Gentiles?”
Paul
added the word, “but”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “also”
which means “even and indeed” “of
the Gentiles”
or “pertaining to people who did not belong to the Jewish nation”.
Paul completed his question by including “the Gentiles” in the
group of people whom God “called”.
When
we meditate upon these words of Paul, we see how both Jew and Gentile
are “called” to salvation by Almighty God. The gospel or
“good news” of Jesus Christ, “God's Son, is given to “whosoever
believes in Him”, and whether a person was born as a member of the
Jewish nation or the other nations, they are all “invited”. Those
who accept God's offer are wise and shall enjoy “everlasting life”
with Him, and those who do not, shall know His “wrath fitted for
destruction”.
Next
time we
see Paul quotes from the Old Testament book of Hosea,
“I
will call them my people, which were not my people”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
