After
declaring, “whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”,
Paul the apostle asked the people in Rome three questions concerning
the spreading of the gospel,
“How
then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how
shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall
they preach, except they be sent?”
He added, “as
it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the
gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”,
and in
chapter ten and verse fifteen of Romans,
Paul told the people in Rome, “they
have not all obeyed the gospel”
where
we read:
But
they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah said, Lord, who has
believed our report?
The
verse begins, “But
they have not all obeyed the gospel.”
Paul
began with the word, “but”
which means “moreover and” “they
have not all”
which means “not each, every, the whole and everyone” “obeyed”
or “listened to, harkened and submitted to” “the
gospel”
which means “the glad tidings and good news of the kingdom of God
soon to be set up and subsequently also of Jesus the Messiah who is
the founder of this kingdom”. Paul shared how not everyone has
“listened to or submitted” to God's “good news”.
The
verse goes on to say, “For
Isaiah said, Lord, who has believed our report?”
Paul
continued with the words, “For
Isaiah”
which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore Isaiah”
whose name means “Jehovah's help” and was “a famous Hebrew
prophet who prophesied in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and
Hezekiah” “said”
which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed”,
“Lord”
which refers to “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which
he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the
Messiah”, “who
has believed”
which refers to “what person has thought to be true, is persuaded
of, credits, and places confidence in” “our
report”
or “the prophet Isaiah's instruction and preaching”. Paul
referred to Isaiah the prophet's words in the book of Isaiah chapter
fifty-three and verse one, “Who
has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD
revealed?”
When
we meditate upon these words of Paul, we notice not everybody
“receives” and “submits to” the “gospel of Jesus Christ”.
Isaiah knew this and asked, “who has believed our report”?
God desires to “save” every person, and He knows some
people will “reject” Him. Jesus Christ came into the world as
God's “appeasing sacrifice” for the sins of everyone, and he
knows those who will “receive and obey Him” as well as those who
will not. Let all who read these words be among those who “believe”
God's “report” and receive Jesus Christ as “Savior”
today.
Next
time we
see Paul tells his readers, “faith
comes by hearing … the word of God”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
