Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungry, and you gave me meat: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in: Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came unto me”, and in chapter twenty-five and verse thirty-seven of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus said the, “righteous answer”, “when did we see you hungry … or thirsty?” where we read:
Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungry,
and fed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink?
The verse reads, “Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you an hungry, and fed you?” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “then” which means “at that time and moment” “shall the righteous” which refers to “will the ones who observe divine laws, the upright, virtuous and keep the commands of God” “answer him” which means “responded and spoke to Jesus”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “when” or “at what time and moment” “saw we you hungry” or “did the disciples observe, notice, discern and discover Jesus in want and need of food and nourishment”, “and fed you” which means “and delivered, provided, extended and presented food to Jesus”? Matthew wrote how Jesus said the “righteous” or His “disciples” responded by asking Him when they “observed” Him “hungry” and provided food for Him.
The verse goes on to say, “or thirsty, and gave you drink?” Matthew continued with Jesus' words, “or thirsty” which means “in want or need of irrigation or water”, “and gave you drink” which means “and delivered, provided, extended and presented water or irrigation to Him”? Matthew shared how Jesus said the “righteous” continued to question as to when they “observed” Him being “thirsty” and provided “drink” to Him.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the “disciples” of Jesus were unaware of the times when they saw Jesus “hungry” or “thirsty”, and they did not know when they provided Jesus “food” or “drink” to meet His need. God is aware of people meeting the needs of others even when they are incognizant themselves, and as they yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, they will learn to minister to others in the same way He has ministered to them.
Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how the righteous continue to ask when “did we see you as a stranger … or naked”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
