Matthew the apostle wrote, “and it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse two of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus referred to“the passover”, His “betrayal” and His “crucifixion” where we read:
You know that after two days is the feast of the passover,
and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
The verse reads, “You know that after two days is the feast of the passover, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “you know” which means “the disciples are aware, discover, discern and notice” “that after two days” or “when two days more have passed from their current time” “is the feast of the passover” or “the paschal feast extending from the fourteenth to the twentieth day of the month Nisan” . Matthew shared how Jesus reminded His “disciples” about the “passover feast” which was only “two days” away.
The verse goes on to say, “... and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.” Matthew added the words, “and the Son of man” which refers to “God's Son Jesus” “is betrayed” or “is given into the hands of another, delivered up to custody to be judged and condemned” “to be crucified” which means “to be driven with stakes, palisade and impaled and killed upon a cross”. Matthew shared how Jesus said He would be “given over to others to be judged and condemned which would result in His being “driven with stakes upon a cross”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew His future “betrayal” and condemnation to death upon a cross. Though the “feast of passover” was to be celebrated two days from the time when Jesus spoke these words, He was looking ahead to the time when He would He would be “given into the hands of others” who would judge Him and crucify Him upon a cross. Jesus' deliberate actions toward this time in His life should demonstrate to everyone how much He desired to pay the price for the penalty of sin, and since the “salvation” of mankind was on His mind, He continued to walk toward this time when His words would be fulfilled.
Next time Matthew shares how the “religious leaders” assembled again, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
