Crucified and Garments Parted - Matthew 27:35

Matthew the apostle wrote how Pilate's soldiers led Jesus, “unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse thirty-five of his book, Matthew wrote how the soldiers, “ crucified him, and parted his garments” where we read:

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

The verse reads,And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots:” Matthew began words, “and they crucified him” which means “and Pilate's soldiers “palisaded, drove down with stakes and hung Jesus upon a cross”, “and parted his garments” or “and cut in pieces his clothing or garments”, “casting lots” which means “threw die such as a pebble, potsherd or bit of wood”. Matthew shared how the soldiers not only hung Jesus upon a cross, but they stripped Him beforehand so they could “cast die” or “gamble” for pieces of His clothing.

The verse goes on to say, “that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.” Matthew continued with the words, “that it might be fulfilled” or “so it would be completed, finished and rendered full” “which was spoken” which means “that was uttered, declared and proclaimed” “by the prophet” or “from the one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman and solemnly declared to men what he received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”, “they parted my garments” which means “people cut in pieces and clave asunder the Messiah's clothing” “among them” which refers to “between themselves”, “and upon my vesture” or “and with the Messiah's array and raiment” “did they cast lots” which means “people cast die and gambled”. Matthew shared how the crucifixion and “dividing” of Jesus' clothing fulfilled another prophecy concerning the Messiah.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus fulfilled the prophesy found in Psalm twenty-two and verse eight where we read, “they part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture”, and the Gospel according to the apostle John tells us, Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.” (John 19:23-24) Jesus once again is proven to be the “Christ, the Messiah and Son of God” as He fulfilled every detail concerning the Messiah's first advent to the world. God designed all these factors so those who investigate them will find that only one person fulfilled all of them, (there are over 300 in the Old Testament concerning the first advent of the Messiah), and those who are wise will not only look through all of them, but yield their lives to Him in faith and trust when they find Jesus is indeed the Messiah sent from God.

Next time Matthew wrote how the governor's soldiers, “sitting down they watched him there”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
