When cast my thoughts upon the day
when sacrifice began
that thou would give thy life for mine
I canst not take it in
Unhallowed lips hurled hate filled words
pretentious and unlearned
the spitted blows upon thy face
diffused and most unearned
Contemptuous speech did hail the air
false witnesses untrue
appeared before thy sacred face
were laced with ridicule
Creation's blow to thus absolve
thy kingship and thy rule
their ignorance made manifest
by unbelieving fools
Thy battered brow thus beaten red
thy wrangled heart torn out
The wretched stripes upon thy back
the wound struck deep in doubt
Thy flowing blood and bruised face
Thy bloodied back and crown
the thorns pressed deep within thy pate
the cross borne falling down
The driven stakes that hung thee there
upon that wretched cross
the evil of my sin held firm
while paying for my loss
And lest I be forlorn to fail
forgetting absence still
My God, My God Forsaken thee
according to thy will
The spear within thy side did pierce
heart's water and thy blood
while guilty soul my fate thou saw
thus spilled eternal love
And peering down the ages fore
thou viewed my soul condemned
and sacrificed thy earthly life
to thus remove my sin
Now grateful thus forever more
my soul shall worship thee
e'er for my sake thou hast received
the death thou paid for me
I'll spend my life in humbled bow
what thou wouldst not recant
forgiving thus my anguished soul
by grace that thou didst grant
And till I lay my eyes to rest
Thy sacrifice for me
alone doth give me sacred hope
eternal life with thee
