Jesus Troubled in Spirit - John 13:21

The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receives whomsoever I send receives me; and he that receives me receives him that sent me”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-one of his book John shared how Jesus, “was troubled in spirit” where we read:

When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said,

Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

The verse reads, “When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, ... John began with the words, “When Jesus had thus said” which means “at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed His words about the person who receives Him receives Him that sent Him”, “he was troubled in spirit” or “he, Jesus, was agitated, disquieted and disturbed in equanimity within His simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”, “and testified” which means “and bear record, witnessed and gave report”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. John shared how Jesus was “disquieted and disturbed” in His “soul” as He “bore witness” and uttered the following words.

The verse continues, “... Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.” John added the words, “Verily, verily” which means “truly, truly or surely, surely”, “I say unto you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to you, disciples of Jesus”, “that one of you” which means “that a particular and certain one of you, disciples of Jesus” “shall betray me” or “will deliver me, Jesus, over to the authorities to be judged, condemned, tortured and put to death”. John shared how Jesus certifiably told His disciples that a particular “one” of them would “deliver” Him over to the authorities to be tried, tortured and executed.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew His fate included “one” of His disciples “delivering” Him over to the authorities. Jesus came to the world to die for the sins of every person, and each step within His purpose was filled with His love for mankind. Without sins being removed from people, they would remain separated from God forever. Jesus suffered and died on the cross so every person would have an opportunity to receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they do, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Let all who read these words receive the Lord Jesus and never be known as “one” who “betrays” Him.

Next time John shares how, “the disciples looked one on another, doubting”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
