Divorce and Adultery - Luke 16:18

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail”, and in chapter sixteen and verse eighteen of his book Luke wrote how Jesus told the Pharisees, “whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adulterywhere we read:

Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery:

and whosoever marries her that is put away from her husband commits adultery.

The verse reads, “Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery: Luke began with the words, “whosoever puts away” or “whatever male husband sets free, dismisses, detains no longer, bids depart, sends away and divorces” “his wife” which means “his own female spouse”, “and marries another” or “and weds or leads into marriage another woman”, “commits adultery” which means “is debauched and suffers adultery”. Luke shared how Jesus said the man who “divorces” his wife and marries another woman, “commits adultery”.

The verse continues, and whosoever marries her that is put away from her husband commits adultery.Luke added the words, “and whosoever marries her” or “and whatever man is wed to and is given in marriage to the divorced woman” “that is put away from her husband” which means “who is set free, dismissed, detained no longer, bid depart, sent away and divorced” “commits adultery” or “is debauched and suffers adultery”. Luke shared how Jesus said the person who marries a “divorced” woman has also “committed adultery”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the “Divine” standard when it comes to “marriage and divorce”. Jesus said anyone who “divorces” and marries another person has “committed adultery”. That is His standard, and we know this “standard” is rarely kept in the day in which we live. People marry and divorce, marry and divorce and marry and divorce over and over again, and each time, according to Jesus, they “commit adultery”. In other words, this is “sinful behavior” against God. There are various reasons people get divorce, and in Jesus' day a man could get a “divorce” by simply giving his wife a paper called “a writing of divorce” and it was final. Any reason could be used from burning the husband's eggs at breakfast to infidelity, so “marriage” was not honored as God originally intended it. Genesis chapter two and verse twenty-four says, Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh”, and this idea is repeated in the book of Ephesians chapter five and verse thirty-one, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh”. God sent His Son Jesus to die for “all” sins that separate people from God's original intention, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they are to be guided with His help step by step to obey His principles that shall never fade away.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus began another story by saying, “there was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linenso read ahead, and we shall join together then.
