Faithful in Least and Much - Luke 16:10

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of you? give an account of your stewardship; for you may be no longer steward. Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord takes away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much do you owe unto my lord? And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take your bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. Then said he to another, And how much do you owe? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take your bill, and write fourscore. And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when you fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations”, and in chapter sixteen and verse ten of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “he that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much” where we read:

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much:

and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

The verse reads, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: Luke began with the words, “he that is faithful” or “the person whether male or female who is trustworthy and reliable” “in that which is least” which means “with the things that are smallest and of very little rank and importance” “is faithful also in much” or “is trustworthy and reliable even and indeed in that which is large, abundant and plenteous”. Luke shared how Jesus said the person who is “worthy of trust” in the “small and unimportant things” is also “worthy of trust” in things which are of great importance.

The verse goes on to say, “and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” Luke continued with the words, “and he that is unjust” or “and the person who is unrighteous, sinful and deceitful” “in the least” which means “in the smallest and of very little rank and importance” “is unjust also in much” or “is unrighteous, sinful and deceitful in that which is large, abundant and plenteous”. Luke shared how Jesus said the person who is “unrighteous and sinful” in “small things” is also “unrighteous and sinful” in things which are “abundant and plenteous”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus said a person's “faithfulness” is determined by what they do with “small things”. When a person can be “trusted” with small matters, they shall be “trusted” with larger ones. However, if they are “unrighteous and sinful” in the “smaller things”, they cannot be “trusted” with larger ones. God knows the “heart” and the “actions” of every person, and those who yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will have the greatest advantage as they hear and obey Him in whatever they possess. God is looking for “faithfulness”, and if a person desires to “advance” in His Kingdom, they should be “faithful” with whatever God has provided regardless of how “small” or “large” it is.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus said, “If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true richesso read ahead, and we shall join together then.
