You Know the Commandments - Luke 18:20

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why do you call me good? none is good, save one, that is, God”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twenty of his book Luke wrote how Jesus told the ruler, “you know the commandments” where we read:

You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal,

Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and your mother.

The verse reads, “You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, ... Luke began with the words, “you know” or “you, the certain ruler, perceive, notice, discern, discover, pay attention to and observe” “the commandments” which means “the orders, charges, precepts and injunctions given by God”, “Do not commit adultery” or “do not have unlawful intercourse with another man's wife and be debauched”, “Do not kill” which means “do not slay or murder people”, “Do not steal” or “do not commit a theft or take away by stealth”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “certain ruler” he was aware of the commandments of God concerning “adultery, murder and theft”.

The verse goes on to say, “... Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and your mother.” Luke continued with the words, “do not bear false witness” or “do not utter falsehoods in giving testimony or be an untrue testifier”, “Honor your father” which means “revere, venerate and fix value upon the certain ruler's male progenitor and immediate ancestor” “and your mother” or “and the certain ruler's female progenitor and immediate ancestor”. Luke shared how Jesus continued His list of “God's commandments” with “not lying” and “revering and fixing value” upon the “certain ruler's” parents.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the “commandments” of God that deal with a person relating to other people. The “ten commandments” of God are divided between the first four commandments which have to do with a person's relationship with God, and the last six which have to do with relating to one's fellowman. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and they are to understand the purpose of the law was to show the “sinfulness” of mankind. Even though this “certain ruler” will say he kept all these laws, we shall soon discover he was still lacking in what would gain “eternal life”.

Next time Luke shares how the ruler tells Jesus, “all these I kept from my youth up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
