Shall Not God Avenge His Elect? - Luke 18:7

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man. And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of my adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man. Yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge says”, and in chapter eighteen and verse seven of his book Luke wrote how Jesus asked, “shall not God avenge his own elect?” where we read:

And shall not God avenge his own elect,

which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

The verse reads, “And shall not God avenge his own elect, ... Luke began with the words, “and shall not God” or “and will not the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “avenge” which means “revenge and provide vengeance and punishment on behalf of” “his own elect” or “God's personal chosen, selected and picked out ones”. Luke shared how Jesus began to question His disciples as to whether “God Himself” would “vindicate” His “chosen ones”.

The verse continues, “... which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?” Luke added the words, “which cry” or “who raise their voice, speak with a high and strong shout asking for help” “day and night unto him” which means “every sunrise to sunset and sunset to sunrise to God”, “though he bear long with them” or “even as, also and indeed that God perseveres patiently and bravely in their enduring misfortunes and trouble with the person who cries day and night before Him”? Luke shared how Jesus referred to the person who “shouts out and raises their voice” to God even when He does not “respond” to them right away.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus questioned whether His disciples understood how His Holy Father God would certainly respond to people who “consistently and persistently” make their requests to Him. God loves people, and when they submit themselves to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they become His “chosen or elected” ones and are given the opportunity to be heard by God for their persistent asking. If this “unjust judge” vindicated the “widow”, how much more will the Heavenly Father hear and respond to His own children?

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says God, “will avenge them speedily”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
