The Eagles Gathered Together - Luke 17:37

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left”, and in chapter seventeen and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke wrote how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “where Lord?” and Jesus answered, “wheresoever the body is, there will the eagles be gathered together” where we read:

And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord?

And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

The verse reads, “And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? Luke began with the words, “and they answered and said unto him” or “and Jesus' disciples responded and began to speak by uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asking Jesus”, “where” which means “in what place or location” “Lord” or “One to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”? Luke shared how Jesus' disciples referred to Him as “Master” while they wondered in what location the people would be “received” and “rejected” when He appears.

The verse goes on to say, “And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, there will the eagles be gathered together.” Luke continued with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “wheresoever the body is” which means “in whatever place or location the physical body exists”, “there will the eagles” or “in that place and location will the eagle birds that get their name from their wind-like flight” “be gathered together” which means “be assembled, collected, joined and drawn with one another”. Luke shared how Jesus said in whatever place the “physical” body of a person is located, the “eagles” of the sky will be assembled.

When we mediate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the curiosity of Jesus' disciples and His answer to their question. They desired to know where this “reception and rejection” of people would occur. Jesus responded by referring to way “eagles” which are “prey eating birds” assemble when there is “flesh” to eat. The idea is that people from all over will be refused and rejected by God for their unbelief in His Son Jesus, and when Jesus appears, there will be vast devastation for those who remain upon the earth. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to save people from their sins so they may live with Him forever. Those who refuse to receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will soon discover after His appearing, they have made themselves “eagles food” for denying God's offer to be saved.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke shares how Jesus spoke another parable to His disciples about how, “men ought always to pray, and not to faint” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
