Eating, Drinking and Giving in Marriage - Luke 17:27

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the people in Noah's day, “did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark” where we read:

They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage,

until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

The verse reads, “They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, ... Luke began with the words, “they did eat” or “the people surrounding Noah devoured and consumed food”, “they drank” which means “and the people imbibed”, “they married wives” or “the men among the people were wedded to women”, “they were given in marriage” which means “the people gave away their daughters to be wedded to men”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the normal activities in Noah's day such as “eating, drinking, getting married and giving away daughters to be wed”.

The verse continues,... until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.Luke added the words, “until the day” or “up to the time or specific sunrise to sunset” “that Noah” which means “that Noah whose name means rest and was the tenth in descent from Adam and the second father of the human family” “entered into the ark” or “arose and appeared within Noah's vessel which was built in the form of an ark”, “and the flood came” which means “and the inundation or deluge arose and appeared”, “and destroyed them all” or “and entirely abolish, rendered useless and put to ruin each, every, the whole and everyone of the people who surrounded Noah and his family”. Luke shared how Jesus said there came a specific time when Noah and his family came inside the “ark”, and the deluge appeared and “destroyed and put to ruin” all the people who were outside of the “ark's” safety.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we are reminded by Jesus of the normal day to day activities of the people who surrounded Noah. These people were like those of today because they “eat, drink, get married and give their daughters in marriage” which are all regular activities. Though Noah warned them over and over again concerning the “rain” and “devastation” that was to come, the people simply ignored him and went about their “busy” lives. God knows there will be a day when “sudden destruction” comes upon the earth, and only those who receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be “saved” (in the ark). Those who refuse and reject Jesus will be like the people who were outside the “ark” in Noah's day, and woe be to them who suffer the sudden great destruction by the Lord God Almighty.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “likewise also as it was in the days of Lot” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
