Jesus Must Suffer and Be Rejected - Luke 17:25

The beloved physician Luke wrote about Jesus, “when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God comes not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when you shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you shall not see it. And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lightens out of the one part under heaven, shines unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-five of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said He, “must suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation” where we read:

But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

The verse reads, “But first must he suffer many things, ... Luke began with the words, “But first” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover chiefly and principally” “must he suffer” which means “it is necessary, behooved and needful that Jesus undergo, be affected with and experience” “many things” or “a large and plenteous amount of difficulties”. Luke shared how Jesus said He would experience a large amount of troublesome things.

The verse continues,... and be rejected of this generation.Luke added the words, “and be rejected” or “and be disapproved, repudiated and disallowed” “of this generation” which means “by the current group of men who were very like each other in endowments, pursuits and character”. Luke shared how Jesus said people within the current “generation” would “refuse and disapprove” of Him.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus spoke of the “suffering” and “rejection” that was to come upon Him. The “generation” of people who lived when Jesus was on the earth “rejected” Him, and they eventually allow Him to “suffer greatly”. God's desire is to “save” every person from their “sins”, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they have fulfilled God's purpose regardless of the “rejection and suffering” endured by Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
