Let Us Go and Die with Him - John 11:16

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent you may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him”, and in chapter eleven and verse sixteen of his book John shared, “then said Thomas … let us also go, that we may die with him” where we read:

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples,

Let us also go, that we may die with him.

The verse reads, “Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, ... John began with the words, “Then said Thomas” which means “at that time uttered, declared and proclaimed Thomas whose name means a twin and was one of Jesus' disciples”, “which is called Didymus” or “who is named and mentioned as Didymus which means two fold or twain”, “unto his fellow disciples” which means “to Thomas' co-learning students, pupils and attendants”. John shared how Jesus' disciple “Thomas”, who was also named “Didymus”, proclaimed the following words to the other disciples who were with him.

The verse continues, “... Let us also go, that we may die with him. John added the words, “let us also go” whose name means “permit and allow us, Thomas and the other disciples, to even so and indeed depart and leave”, “that we may die” or “so we, disciples of Jesus, may perish” “with him” which means “alongside Jesus”. John shared how “Thomas” told the other disciples that they should go alongside Jesus so they could “perish” with Him.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Thomas” made a bold statement to his fellow disciples. “Thomas” determined they should “follow” Jesus even if they were to “die” for being with Him. This is commitment, and anyone who yields their life to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will desire to be with Him for all their lives, and God loves those who yield to Him with this kind of commitment.

Next time John shares, “when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
