You Know Nothing at All - John 11:49

The apostle John wrote how Jesus stood at the grave where Lazarus was buried, and “cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation”, and in chapter eleven and verse forty-nine of his book John shared how, “Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said … You know nothing at all” where we read:

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them,

You know nothing at all,

The verse reads, “And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, ... John began with the words, “and one of them” which means “and a particular person among the religious leaders or Pharisees”, “named Caiaphas” or “whose name means as comely”, “being the high priest” which means “existing as the chief priest” “that same year” or “that selfsame year”, “said unto them” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words to the other religious leaders known as Pharisees. John shared how the “chief priest” “Caiaphas” began to respond to the conclusion made by the Pharisees.

The verse goes on to say, “... You know nothing at all, ...” John continued with the words, “you know” which means “you, Pharisees, understand, perceive and discern” “nothing at all” which means “not one thing”. John shared how “Caiaphas” told the “religious leaders” and Pharisees that they were without understanding in the matter of Jesus.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how the “high priest named Caiaphas” began to speak about the conclusion the Pharisees made concerning Jesus. Their fear was that if everyone began to believe and trust in Jesus, the “Romans” would take away their possessions and power. “Caiaphas” told them they knew “nothing”, and he will continue his words in our next verse. God's desire is for all people to know He sent His Son Jesus to the world to be their “Savior and Lord”, and when they receive Him, they will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him.

Next time John shares how, “nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
