Matthew the apostle wrote, “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calls for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse fifty-one of his book, Matthew wrote how, “the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom” where we read:
And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom;
and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
The verse reads, “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; ...” Matthew began words, “And, behold” which means “and consider, lo, look and see”, “the veil” or “the curtain in the temple at Jerusalem which separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies” “of the temple” which means “belonging to the sacred worship place in Jerusalem” “was rent in twain” or “was cleaved asunder, torn, divided and split into factions” “from the top to the bottom” which means “from the top of the curtain to the bottom of the curtain”. Matthew shared how as soon as Jesus “cried aloud” and “dismissed” His “Spirit”, the “curtain” that separated the “Holy Place” from the “Holy of Holies” was ripped from the top to the bottom.
The verse goes on to say, “... and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;” Matthew continued with the words, “and the earth” or “and the arable land, ground, territory and region” “did quake” or “moved, was agitated, was with tremor and shaking”, “and the rocks rent” which means “and the stones and rocks surrounding them split, divided and broke into pieces”. Matthew shared how there was an “earthquake” that “split” rocks surrounding the area of the cross.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we note how this supernatural act occurred as soon as Jesus gave up the “ghost” and was dead. The “Jerusalem temple's” “veil” was ripped from the top to the bottom, and there was an “earthquake” that split “rocks” in the surrounding area. God watched as His Son Jesus gave His life to provide a way for mankind to be “saved from their sins” and to forever live with Him. If there was any other way for mankind to be “saved”, these things would not have happened, and because the “veil” which was known to be about four inches thick was “split” from the “top to the bottom”, access to God is now available to everyone. Those who are wise will study these things carefully and submit themselves to the only true “Messiah” and “Christ”, Jesus, who gave His life and provided “access” to God.
Next time Matthew wrote how, “the graves were opened”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
