Jesus Yields Up the Ghost - Matthew 27:50

Matthew the apostle wrote, “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calls for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse fifty of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus, “yielded up the ghost” where we read:

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

The verse reads, “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, ...Matthew began word, “Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “when he had cried again” or “at the time and moment Jesus another time vociferated and spoke” “with a loud voice” which means “using a abundant, massive and powerful sound and tone of words”. Matthew shared how Jesus “shouted out” with “vociferous words” once again.

The verse continues, “... yielded up the ghost.” Matthew added the words, “yielded up” or “dismissed and sent away” “the ghost” or “the vital principal by which the body is animated”. Matthew shared how Jesus “dismissed” His “Spirit” after He “cried” aloud with His voice.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was fully in control of His “Spirit” during His sufferings. The gospel of John the apostle tells us, When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost”, and the completion of all that was necessary for mankind to be “saved” was fulfilled. (See John 19:30) God's desire to make a way for people to be in a personal relationship with Him was “finished”, and when a person yields their life to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will be “saved” from their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Matthew wrote how, “the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
