Elias or a Prophet - Mark 6:15

Mark wrote how, “king Herod heard of” Jesus; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him”, and in chapter six and verse fifteen of his book, Mark wrote how, “Others said, that it is Elias” or “a prophet” where we read:

Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

The verse reads, “Others said, That it is Elias.” Mark began with the words, “Others said” or “other people uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “that it is Elias” which means “that Jesus is Elijah”. Mark shared how other people thought Jesus was the prophet “Elijah”.

The verse continues, And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.” Mark added the words, “and others said” which means “and still other people uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “that it is a prophet” or “that Jesus is one who was moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation ”, “or as one of the prophets” which means “or like unto and in likeness of one of the ones who were moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”. Mark shared how other people thought Jesus was either a “prophet” or like one of the “prophets”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how people had different opinions as to who Jesus really was. Because Jesus was so dynamic, said so many great things and performed marvelous miracles, people made conjectures about Him. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate, and those who are wise will not only understand who He is, but also submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark shares, “when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
