Mark wrote how Jesus was on the way to Jairus' house because his daughter was dying. Along the way a woman with an issue of blood came behind Jesus and was determined to be healed if she only touched His clothes. She was healed and Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your plague.” Mark continued with the words, “While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Your daughter is dead: why trouble you the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. And he came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he said unto them, Why make you this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleeps. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he took the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entered in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto you, arise”, and in chapter five and verse forty-two of his book, Mark writes how, “straightway the damsel arose” where we read:
And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years.
And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
The verse reads, “And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years.” Mark began with the words, “and straightway” or “and immediately and forthwith” “the damsel arose” which means “the little girl rose up from lying down and stood”, “and walked” or “and ambled and tread all around”; “for she was of the age of twelve years” which means “because, since and on account that the little girl was twelve years old”. Mark shared how the “twelve year old” “damsel” immediately “rose up, stood and began to walk around”.
The verse continues, “And they were astonished with a great astonishment.” Mark added the words, “and they were astonished” which means “and the people at Jairus' house were amazed, thrown into wonderment and beside themselves” “with a great astonishment” or “with a massive alienation of mind, amazement and blended fear and wonderment”. Mark shared how the people were “amazed” by what happened with the “little girl”.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we discover the reaction of the crowd that was gathered within Jairus' house. They previously “laughed” at Jesus “to scorn”, but were now with their jaws opened with amazement and wonder. Jesus is able to do “supernatural” works, and where it appeared this “twelve year old little girl” was “dead”, He restored her back to life. God's desire is to “save” every person from the pending “spiritual death” caused by “sin”, and when they receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, not only will He “raise them from death to life”, but He also promises to provide “everlasting life” with God.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “charged them straightly that no man should know it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
