Sandals with Only One Coat - Mark 6:9

Mark wrote how Jesus, “called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits. And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse”, and in chapter six and verse nine of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples they should, “be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats” where we read:

But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

The verse reads, “But be shod with sandals;” Mark began with the words, “but be shod” or “however the disciples were to bind themselves” “with sandals” which refers to “with soles made of wood or leather which covered the bottom of the foot and were bound on with thongs”. Mark shared how Jesus wanted His disciples to wear “sandals” upon their feet.

The verse continues, and not put on two coats.” Mark added the words, “and not put on” which means “and not to be clothed or arrayed with” “two coats” or “two tunics, vestments or outer garments”. Mark shared how Jesus instructed His disciples not to “be clothed” with two “outer garments”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus cared for the “feet” of His disciples, but also did not want them to put on excess outer garments. Each of these instructions were to protect and provide for His disciples, and at the same time, they would continue to be dependent upon Him. God loves people, and He owns everything. His desire is to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus that makes them reliant upon Him for all their needs. God has invited every person to live dependent upon Him, and when they yield their lives to Jesus, they shall find not only provision and protection in this life, but also in the everlasting life to come.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus told His disciples what they should do, “in what place soever you enter into a house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
