The Charge to Tell No Man of Jesus' Transfiguration - Mark 9:9

Mark wrote how, “Jesus took with him Peter, and James, and John, and lead them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. For he did not know what to say; for they were sore afraid. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves”, and in chapter nine and verse nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus “charged” His disciples, “that they should tell no man what things they had seen” where we read:

And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

The verse reads, “And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, ...Mark began with the words, “and as they came down” which means “and while Jesus, Peter, James and John descended” “from the mountain” or “from the high rising above the plain”, “he charged them” which means “Jesus ordered, commanded, disposed and admonished Peter, James and John” “that they should tell no man” or “that Peter, James and John were not to speak to, declare, recount, describe or relate to any person whether male or female” “what things they had seen” which means “the events Peter, James and John observed and perceived with their eyes”. Mark shared how Jesus instructed Peter, James and John not to “recount” what they had seen to any person.

The verse goes on to say, ... till the Son of man were risen from the dead. Mark continued with the words, “till the Son of man” which means “until Jesus who is God's Son” “were risen” or “was caused to rise up, be raised and appeared” “from the dead” which means “from the ones who have breathed their last, are deceased, destitute of life, lifeless and inanimate”. Mark shared how Peter, James and John were not to disclose what they saw on the “mount of transfiguration” until after Jesus was “resurrected” from the grave.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus did not want His “transfiguration” disclosed to others until after He was “raised from the dead”. Once again God has His timing for everything that leads to the salvation of mankind, and Jesus knew when certain events were to be shared. God wants every person to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit themselves to Him, they will understand that God has a plan, and He is going to work all things out according to His purpose and timing.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus' disciples were, “questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
