Luke the physician shared how Jesus, “ full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If you therefore will worship me, all shall be yours”, and in chapter four and verse eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells the devil, “Get thee behind me, Satan” where we read:
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan:
for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.
The verse reads, “And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan:” Luke began with the words, “And Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “answered” which means “responded and began to speak” “and said unto him” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed unto the devil”, “Get thee behind me” which means “you withdraw, depart, get away and aback to to the rear of Jesus” “Satan” which refers to “the adversary, the prince of the evil spirits and the inveterate adversary of God and Christ”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “devil” to “withdraw and depart to the rear” of Him.
The verse continues, “for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.” Luke added Jesus' words, “for it is written” which means “because, since, on account that it is delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material”, “you shall worship” or “a person should reverence, give homage to and prostrate himself or herself to” “the Lord” which means “to the One whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah” “your God” or “that person's Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “and him only” which means “and God solely and alone” “shall you serve” or “is a person to render service to, offer gifts in observance of the rites instituted for worship and to discharge in a sacred office”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the scripture again where it said a person was to “worship and serve” God alone.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus responded to the “devil's” second temptation. Again Jesus referred to the scripture that gave people instruction concerning who they were to worship. God alone was to be worshiped and served, and Jesus could not and would not bow in reverence to “Satan” or anyone else who tempted Him to do so. (See Deuteronomy 6:13 and 10:20) God desires to have all people relate to Him through His Son Jesus, and when they worship and serve Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall receive forgiveness for their sins and everlasting life with God. Those who are wise will study Jesus' way of resisting “the devil” and employ the scriptures even as Jesus did the next time they are tempted with “the lust of the eyes”.
Next time Luke shares how the devil set Jesus, “on a pinnacle of the temple”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
