Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Thara and Nachor - Luke 3:34

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, Neri, Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi, Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, Eliakim, Melea, Menan, Mattatha, Nathan, David, Jesse, Obed, Booz, Salmon, Naasson, Aminadab, Aram, Esrom, Phares and Juda, and in chapter three and verse thirty-four of his book Luke continues with more names in the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham,

which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, ...” Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Jacob” which means “heel catcher or supplanter”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Isaac” which means “to laugh” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Abraham” which means “father of a multitude”. Luke continued to name the ancestors of Jesus with - “Heel catcher or supplanter, to laugh and father of a multitude”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, ...” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Thara” or “station”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Nachor” or “snorting”. Luke continued to share the lineage of Jesus with two more names - “station and snorting which means to burn”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover more of God's plan to save mankind through His Son Jesus as we consider this group of names. “ Heel catcher or supplanter, to laugh, father of a multitude, station and snorting” may seem to be irregular at first glance in God's message, however, we realize God came to “save” people who are “heel catchers” or those who try to “trip others” in their lives, and God “laughed” or was amused by those who thought they could save themselves. Only God is the “father of a multitude” who “stations” Himself in a position to keep them from “snorting” or “burning” in their present condition. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to save them from their sinful state. He wants to forgive them regardless of how “bad” they have been, and when they submit their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they not only shall be forgiven but also shall inherit “everlasting life” from God. May all who read this lineage of Jesus know, understand and yield their lives to Him.
