This Day is This Scripture Fulfilled - Luke 4:21

Luke the physician shared how Jesus, came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” where we read:

And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

The verse reads, “And he began to say unto them, ... Luke began with the words, “and he began to say” or “and Jesus initiated and started to utter, declare and proclaim” “unto them” which means “to the people within the synagogue who had their eyes fixed upon Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus “started” to say the following words to the people within the “synagogue”.

The verse goes on to say, “... This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” Luke continued with the words, “this day” which means “this very day” “is this scripture fulfilled” or “is this rendering, prophesy and proclamation completed, finished and made perfect” “in your ears” which means “within the physical hears and capacity for hearing and perceiving of the people”. Luke shared how Jesus said “the very day” He read this passage of prophesy to them was the “completion” and “fulfillment” of what Isaiah wrote.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus said about the prophesy He read. He told the people within the “synagogue” that the “prophesy” concerning the Messiah was “fulfilled” on the same and very day He read the passage. In other words, He told the people, He was the Christ and Messiah of God. Jesus came to “preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives and the recovering of the sight of the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord”. In other words, Jesus came to be the “Savior and Lord” of mankind, and anyone who puts their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God. Those who are wise will examine who Jesus said He is and discover His words are true. Jesus Christ is the “Savior of the World”, and all who yield their lives to Him shall be “saved” and live forever with His Father God.

Next time Luke shares how the people said, “Is not this Joseph's son?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
