Luke the physician shared how the people who saw Jesus take dominion over an unclean spirit, “were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was … with a great fever” where we read:
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house.
And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
The verse reads, “And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. ” Luke began with the words, “and he arose out” or “and Jesus rose up and departed” “of the synagogue” which means “from the sacred worship and assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures”, “and entered” or “and came into or made entrance” “into Simon's house” which means “in the abode, dwelling place and habitation of Simon or Peter whose name means little rock or stone”. Luke shared how Jesus left the “synagogue” and went to “Simon's” home.
The verse continues, “And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.” Luke added the words, “and Simon's wife's mother” which means “and the mother in law of Simon or Peter whose name means a little rock or stone” “was taken with a great fever” or “was besieged with, constrained and compressed with a massive inflammation within her body”; “and they besought him” or “and the people within Simon's house entreated, requested, begged and beseeched Jesus” “for her” which means “on behalf of and for the sake of Simon's mother in law”. Luke shared how the mother of “Simon's wife” was sick with a “great fever”, and the people within “Simon's” house “entreated” Jesus on her behalf.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about another “problem” Jesus was asked to address. Jesus had authority over the “unclean spirit” within the man in the synagogue in Capernaum, and He had power over this fever. The people within “Simon Peter's” house knew if they asked Jesus to help, He would. Jesus solved problems both “big” and “small”, and whether there was a man possessed by an “unclean devil” or a woman who was stricken with a “great fever”, Jesus was the answer. Because God the Father desired to save mankind from their sins which separated them from a relationship with Him, He sent His Son Jesus to “die” in their place, and He “solved” the problem of “sin”. Jesus is able to “solve” any problem whether physical or spiritual that a person encounters. The wise person will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and find Him more than capable to work out an answer to any dilemma they face in this life.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
