Jesus Thrust Out of the City - Luke 4:29

Luke the physician shared how, “And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath” at Jesus' words”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke shared how the people in the synagogue, “rose up, and thrust him out of the city” where we read:

And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

The verse reads,And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, ... Luke began with the words, “and rose up” or “and the people within the synagogue in Nazareth stood up and arose”, “and thrust him” which means “and drove, cast and sent Jesus” “out of the city” or “without their town, village, habitation and abode”. Luke shared how the people within the synagogue were so angry that they “drove” Jesus out of their dwelling place.

The verse goes on to say,... and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. Luke continued with the words, “and led him” which means “and conducted, moved and brought him” “unto the brow of the hill” or “to the place of prominence or projection of the mountain” “whereon their city was built” which means “upon which their town, village, habitation and abode was erected, founded and established”, “that they might cast him down” or “so the people within the town and synagogue could throw and precipitate Jesus” “headlong” which means “headfirst”. Luke shared how the people within the synagogue took Jesus out to the “precipice of the mountain” upon which their “city” was erected so they could throw Him off the “edge of the cliff” headfirst and rid themselves of Him.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn just how “angry” this crowd was toward Jesus. Can we even imagine why people would desire to “kill” Jesus after declaring to them He was the “fulfillment” of the scriptures prophesied concerning the Messiah? And yet, today there are many who will “kill” Christians who proclaim Jesus is the only way to “salvation” from sins. Jesus was so patient, kind and loving toward people who did not believe in Him, and even when His own “native town” desired to “destroy” Him, He died for them anyway. God loves people, even people who hate Him, and He sent His Son Jesus to “die” for their sins. God continues to hold out His arms of acceptance to anyone who will turn from their sins and yield their lives to His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will turn away from their anger that desires to “destroy” Jesus and His message, and submit themselves to the only One who is able to “forgive” their sins and provide them with everlasting life.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus was, “passing through the midst of them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
