Luke the physician shared how Jesus, “ full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If you therefore will worship me, all shall be yours. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here”, and in chapter four and verse ten of his book Luke shared how the devil refers to scripture as he tells Jesus, “he shall give his angels charge over you” where we read:
For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you:
The verse reads, “For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over you, ...” Luke began with the words, “For it is written” or “because, since, on account that it is delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material”, “He shall give his angels” which means “God will order, command and enjoin His messengers and envoys to have” “charge over you” or “rule, assertion and command above His Son Jesus and people”. Luke shared how the “devil” employed Psalms chapter ninety one and verse eleven where it says, “For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep thee in all your ways.” to give Jesus the reason why He should cast Himself off the “temple pinnacle”.
The verse continues, “... to keep you:” Luke added the words, “to keep” which means “to guard carefully and provide providential care of” “you” or “Jesus and people”. Luke shared how the “devil” continued to share the verse that said God's “angels” would provide “providential” care over Jesus if He threw Himself off the pinnacle.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “devil” used “scripture” to convince Jesus to sin against God. “Satan” knows the scripture, and he will employ it to convince people to violate God's principles. “Satan” wanted Jesus to prove Himself to be the Messiah of God by throwing Himself off the pinnacle of the temple while knowing God's angels would save Him. This would demonstrate to the people below that Jesus was special and that He was the Christ of God. God loves people, and Jesus demonstrated how we are to “resist” the “devil” and his attempt to have us “sin” against God. Those who believe and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” receive the power of His Holy Spirit, and they are able to “resist” “Satan's” attempts to have them prove themselves before others.
Next time Luke shares how the devil continues to refer to scripture as he tells Jesus, “in their hands they shall bear you up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
