The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason you in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Your sins be forgiven you; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto you, Arise, and take up your couch, and go into your house”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shared how the man with palsy, “rose up before them” where we read:
And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay,
and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
The verse reads, “And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay,” Luke began with the words, “and immediately” or “and straightway and forthwith” “he rose up before them” which means “the man with the palsy arose, raise up, lifted up and elevated himself in front of the religious leaders and all who were watching”, “and took up that whereon he lay” or “and raised, lifted up and elevated his pallet upon which he was lying”. Luke shared how the man with palsy stood up in front of everyone who was watching and picked up his bed as instructed by Jesus.
The verse goes on to say, “and departed to his own house, glorifying God.” Luke continued with the words, “and departed” which means “and left and went forth” “to his own house” or “to the man with the palsy's own abode, habitation and dwelling place”, “glorifying God” which means “and honoring, extolling, magnifying and celebrating the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how the man with palsy who was healed went home and was praising and honoring “God” as he went.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how the man with palsy obeyed Jesus and was healed in front of everyone who was there. Jesus commanded, and the man responded. He went to his home “honoring” God because a miracle happened in his life that day. Not only was his sin forgiven, but his physical body was cured. We can imagine the delight in the eyes of the men who carried him there, and we can envision the reaction of the “religious leaders” when Jesus made him whole. God loves people, and His desire is to help them both spiritually and physically. When they submit their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, not only will He forgive their sins, but He will be with them in their time of need. Let all who read these words know the “miracle working power” of Jesus Christ and yield their lives to Him today.
Next time Luke shares how, “they were all amazed, and they glorified God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
