The beloved physician Luke shared how, “it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be you clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them”, and in chapter five and verse fifteen of his book Luke shares, “but so much the more went there a fame abroad of him” where we read:
But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him:
and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
The verse reads, “But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him:” Luke began with the words, “but so much the more” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and rather to a greater degree and more willingly and sooner” “went there a fame abroad” which means “passed, spread and reported a speech, utterance and discourse to wide regions and different places” “of him” or “pertaining to Jesus”. Luke shared though Jesus told the man cleansed of leprosy not to tell anyone about his healing, people spread the news about Jesus everywhere in their region anyway.
The verse continues, “and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.” Luke added the words, “and great multitudes” which means “and massive and large crowds of people” “came together to hear” or “assembled and gathered to listen”, “and to be healed by him” which means “and to be served, cured and restored to health by Jesus” “of their infirmities” or “pertaining to the people's weakness, frailty, feebleness of health and sickness”. Luke shared how large groups of people assembled not only to listen to Jesus' teaching, but also to be “cured” of their “sicknesses and frailties”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the “fame” of Jesus growing among people. No one ever taught like Jesus did, and no one had the power to “heal” their bodies like Him. Those who study the words of Jesus will find His teachings encouraging, provoking, convicting and filled with hope. Jesus possessed the power to “heal” not only the physical bodies of people, but also their “souls”. People needed to be “saved” from their “sins” which separated them from a relationship with God, and when He died upon the cross, Jesus bore the penalty for those sins so people would not have to pay for their own sins. Those who put their faith and trust in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life. Let all who read these words broadcast the “good news” of Jesus so all the world will gather together to “hear” Him and be “healed”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
