Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, NeriMelchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi, Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, Eliakim, Melea, Menan, Mattatha, Nathan, David, Jesse, Obed, Booz, Salmon, Naasson, Aminadab, Aram, Esrom, Phares, Juda, Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Thara, Nachor, Saruch, Ragau, Phalec, Heber, Sala, Cainan, Arphaxad, Sem, Noe and Lamech, and in chapter three and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke continued with more names in the lineage of Jesus where we read:
Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared,
which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,
The verse reads, “Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, ...” Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Mathusala” which means “when he dies, there shall be an emission or flood”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Enoch” which means “dedicated” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Jared” which means “descent”. Luke shared three more names of the earthly ancestors of Jesus - “when he dies, there shall be an emission, dedicated and descent”.
The verse continues, “... which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, ...” Luke added the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Maleleel” or “praise of God”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Cainan” or “their smith”. Luke shared two more names in the lineage of Jesus - “praise of God and their smith”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover more of God's message concerning His Messiah, Jesus, through the names of Jesus' earthly ancestors. “When he dies, there shall be an emission or when he dies the flood will come, dedicated, descent, praise of God and their smith”. God was intentional in His effort to save mankind from their sin which separated them from Him. “Methusala” died in the year of the flood of Noah and fulfilled the meaning of his name. God was “dedicated” to “descend” and be among people to His “praise and glory” as He became the “smith or artisan” for the plan of salvation for mankind. God loves everybody, and He desires that they live with Him forever, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they shall be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke adds the last of the names in the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
