Luke the physician shared how Jesus, “came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how the people in the synagogue asked, “Is this not Joseph's son?” where we read:
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth.
And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
The verse reads, “And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. ” Luke began with the words, “and all bare him witness” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the people within the synagogue heard, affirmed and experienced what Jesus taught by divine revelation and inspiration”, “and wondered” which means “and wondered and were in admiration” “at the gracious words” or “at the joyous, pleasurable, delightful, sweet, charming, lovely and favorable speech, decree and mandate” “which proceeded out of his mouth” which means “that went forth and departed from the physical mouth of Jesus”. Luke shared how everyone within the “synagogue” “marveled” at the beautiful “words” that Jesus spoke.
The verse continues, “And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?” Luke added the words, “and they said” which means “and the people within the synagogue uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked”, “Is not this Joseph's son” or “is Jesus not the male offspring and progeny of Joseph whose name means let him add”? Luke shared how the people within the “synagogue” questioned whether Jesus wasn't the “son” of “Joseph”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see begin to see the “doubt” within the people in the “synagogue”. They knew Jesus from His earthly standpoint, and because He was familiar to them through His earthly father “Joseph”, they were having difficulty believing His statement that “this day is this scripture fulfilled in their ears”. Though they “bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth”, they thought they knew Him. God wants people to know His Son Jesus is the Christ and Messiah of the world. He was not just another man. He was not just a great teacher or kind man, He is God's Son and the “Savior and Lord” of the world. Those who believe and trust in Him shall be saved from their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Those who continue to “doubt Him” shall never know the promises of God which are given unto man.
Next time Luke shares how, “you will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
