Beckoning Partners for Filled Ships - Luke 5:7

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus spoke from Simon's boat to a crowd of people who were gathered on the shore of lake Gennesaret, and afterward, “he said unto Simon, launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at your word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake”, and in chapter five and verse seven of his book Luke shares how Simon and those with him in his boat, “beckoned unto their partners” where we read:

And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

The verse reads,And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. Luke began with the words, “And they beckoned unto their partners” or “and Simon and his companions made a nod or sign to their associates and fellow fishermen”, “which were in the other ship” which means “who were within the second boat that was along the shore of lake Gennesaret”, “that they should come” or “that the fellow fishermen should arise, come forth and follow after Simon and those in his boat” “and help them” which means “and give aid, clasp, assist and seize to Simon and the others.”. Luke shared how there was such a massive catch of fish that Simon had to ask his fellow fishermen who were in another boat to “assist” them with the haul.

The verse goes on to say,And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. Luke continued with the words, “and they came” which means “and the fellow fishermen in the other boat arose, came forth and followed Simon and his companions”, “and filled both the ships” or “and imbued, supplied and accomplished the capacity of both their boats”, “so that they began to sink” which means “so Simon and his fellow fishermen's boats began to plunge into the deep and drown”. Luke shared how there were so many fish caught by Simon and the others that both boats began to sink into the deep waters.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover another miracle of Jesus that was well beyond the expectations of these “professional” fishermen. Though they “fished all night, and caught nothing”, their boats were filled to overflowing to the point of sinking. God's capacities are way beyond the ability of people, and though they have great talent, discipline, regiment and drive, they will never be able to surpass the imagination and ability of God. Jesus demonstrated to these “knowledgable fishermen” that He knew more than they did, and when a person discovers this truth for themselves, they shall find Jesus to be more than an ample answer for any problem they incur. God loves people, and He sent Jesus not only to demonstrate His power, but also to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world. Those who are wise will recognize Him for who He is and yield their lives to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Simon Peter, “fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
