The Devil Departs from Jesus - Luke 4:13

Luke the physician shared how Jesus, “full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If you therefore will worship me, all shall be yours. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you: And in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, you shall not tempt the Lord your God”, and in chapter four and verse thirteen of his book Luke shared how the devil, “departed from him for a season” where we read:

And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

The verse reads, “And when the devil had ended all the temptation, ... Luke began with the words, “and when ” or “and at the time and moment” “the devil” which means “and the slanderer, false accuser, calumniator Satan” “had ended” or “finished, completed, accomplished and brought to fulfillment” “all the temptation” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the experiments, attempts, trials and proving”. Luke shared how “Satan” finished “all” the “testings and proving” of Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “... he departed from him for a season.” Luke continued with the words, “he departed from him” which means “the devil left, fled and removed himself from Jesus” “for a season” or “until or unto another and different due measure or an opportune, seasonable and right time”. Luke shared how “Satan” left Jesus “until” another “opportune time”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “devil” left Jesus after he tempted Him “three times”. “The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life” were all presented by “Satan”, and Jesus defeated all the temptations in those areas. John the apostle wrote, For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (See 1 John 2:16), and Jesus demonstrated how to respond to the “devil” when He tempts people in these areas. God desires to forgive people for their “violations” to His law and ways through a relationship with His Son Jesus Christ, and when a person submits their life to Him, He provides the power of His Holy Spirit to defeat temptations. Though “Satan” left Jesus, he was to return, and since this is true with Jesus, so shall it be with every person who yields their life to Him as “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how, “Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and there went out a fame of him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
