People Astonished at Jesus' Doctrine - Luke 4:32

Luke the physician shared how, “all” the people “in the synagogue” in Nazareth, “when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-two of his book Luke shared how the people, “were astonished at his doctrine” where we read:

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

The verse reads,And they were astonished at his doctrine: Luke began with the words, “and they were astonished” or “and the people who heard Jesus teach marveled and were blown away and amazed” “at his doctrine” which means “at Jesus' teaching and instruction”. Luke shared how the people in Capernaum were “amazed” by Jesus' teaching.

The verse continues, for his word was with power. Luke added the words, “for his word” which means “because, since and on account that Jesus' speech, decree, mandate and moral precepts” “was with power” or “was with authority, liberty, jurisdiction and strength”. Luke shared how Jesus spoke with “authority, liberty and strength”, and this caused the people to be “amazed” by His teachings.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see the impact the doctrine of Jesus had upon the people in the city of Capernaum. Because Jesus spoke with “authority”, which was unusual to the people there, they “marveled” at Him. God wants people to learn of Him, learn about Him and learn about His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. When a person is open to listen to the “doctrine of Jesus”, they shall find Him to be “amazing” because He desires to “save” them from their sins and provide them with “everlasting life”. Those who are wise will not only listen to the “word of God”, but also yield themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how, “there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
