Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, Neri, Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi, Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, Eliakim, Melea, Menan, Mattatha, Nathan,David, Jesse, Obed, Booz, Salmon and Naasson, and in chapter three and verse thirty-three of his book Luke added more names to the lineage of Jesus where we read:
Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom,
which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,
The verse reads, “Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, ...” Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Aminadab” which means “one of the prince's people”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Aram” which means “high” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Esrom” which means “enclosed”. Luke added three more names of the ancestors of Jesus - “One of the prince's people, high and enclosed”.
The verse continues, “... which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda, ...” Luke added the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Phares” or “a breach”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Juda” or “he shall be praised”. Luke shared two more names within Jesus' lineage - “A breach and he shall be praised”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about God's desire to save mankind through these names. “One of the prince's people, high, enclosed, a breach and he shall be praised” were included among the names of Jesus' relatives. Jesus, God's Son, was to be a “prince” among the people who came from on “high” and was “enclosed” within heaven, but He came to satisfy the “breach” which separated people from God, sin, and “he shall be praised” forever for His sacrifice. God wants to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son, and He sent Him into the world so people would no longer be kept apart from Him by their sins. “Sin separates” a person from God, and when Jesus came to die on the cross for the penalty of that “sin”, He closed the “breach” between God and man and He shall forever be “praised” for His sacrifice. Praise be to God for great things He has done!
Next time Luke continues to add more names to the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
