What Reason You in Your Hearts? - Luke 5:22

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shares how Jesus asked the religious leaders, “what reason you in your hearts?” where we read:

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them,

What reason you in your hearts?

The verse reads,But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, ... Luke began with the words, “But when Jesus” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and at the time and moment Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “perceived their thoughts” which means “was acquainted with, knew well and thoroughly the religious leaders' thinking, deliberating, hesitation and doubt”, “he answering said unto them” or “Jesus responding and beginning to speak uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the scribes and Pharisees” the following question. Luke shared how Jesus knew the religious leaders' doubt and what they were thinking, so He asked them the following question.

The verse continues,What reason you in your hearts? Luke added the words, “What reason you” which means “what is it that you religious leaders resolve, deliberate, consider, muse and think” “in your hearts” or “within your souls or minds as they are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned “what” these scribes and Pharisees were pondering in their thoughts.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was cognizant of the reasoning by these religious leaders. Though they had these “thoughts” within them, they were exposed to Jesus. Jesus responded to them with a question to which He will add more in the next verse, however, for now let us realize Jesus knows our “thoughts”. He knows our ways, and He knows our sin. He knows when we doubt or have little understanding as to His purposes and plans, and He knows we need a “Savior” from the penalty of death for our sins. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to “save” those who have adverse thoughts toward Him and His ways. Though people are in error when they bring accusations against God, He continues His desire to “forgive” them of their “sins” and provide them with everlasting life. Let all who read these words yield their “thoughts” and ways to Jesus who knows them all.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “which is easier, to say, Your sins be forgiven you; or to say, Rise up and walk”?, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
