Jesus Closing the Book and Sitting Down - Luke 4:20

Luke the physician shared how Jesus, came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord”, and in chapter four and verse twenty of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “closed the book … and sat down” where we read:

And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down.

And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

The verse reads,And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. ... Luke began with the words, “and he closed the book” or “and Jesus folded together, furled or rolled up the scroll”, “and he gave it again” which means “and Jesus delivered and rendered the scroll back” “to the minister” or “to the servant, under-rower, subordinate rower or attendant”, “and sat down” which means “and was seated and settled down”. Luke shared how Jesus “returned” the “scroll of Isaiah” to the “servant” who gave it to Him and was “seated”.

The verse continues, “... and the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.” Luke added the words, “and the eyes” which means “and the physical eyes used for vision” “of all them” or “belonging to each, every, the whole and everyone of the people” “that were in the synagogue” which means “who were within the gathering place or assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures” “were fastened on him” or “were fixed on, gazing intently at and beholding Jesus earnestly and steadfastly”. Luke shared how all the people were looking at Jesus intently as He sat down before them.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we can imagine this scene. Jesus has finished reading the prophesy of Isaiah concerning the Messiah, He's seated, and now everyone within the “synagogue” was looking at Him. Within the normal course of the time within the “synagogue”, someone would read a passage, sit down and then begin to explain what the reading meant. Everyone within the “synagogue” was staring at Jesus, and they were wondering what He would have to say about this passage. God loves people to “pay attention” to Him through His word, and because we have the Bible that is filled with His message concerning His Son Jesus being sent to the world, everyone who reads His words should listen carefully to the message He brings. God desires people to be forgiven of their sins so they can live with Him forever, and those who believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall receive His grace and inherit everlasting life. Let all who read these words pay close attention to what Jesus says, and submit their lives to the Only One who is able to “save” them eternally.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
