Luke the physician shared how Jesus taught in the synagogue in Nazareth, and “all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days, and they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, ...”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how the devils cried out, “let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth?” where we read:
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth?
are you come to destroy us? I know you who you are; the Holy One of God.
The verse reads, “Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth? ” Luke began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Let us alone” which is “and interjection expressive of indignation or of wonder mixed with fear” and means “allow and permit us to be”; “what have we to do with you” or “what business or concern do we evil spirits have with you”, “you Jesus” which means “you Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “of Nazareth” or “belonging to Nazareth which means a watch tower and was the location where Jesus was raised”. Luke shared how the “evil spirits” within the man in the “synagogue” in Capernaum shouted out to Jesus to “leave them alone” as they asked Him what business they had to do with Him and referred to Nazareth which was the city of His upbringing.
The verse continues, “are you come to destroy us? I know you who you are; the Holy One of God.” Luke added the words, “are you come to destroy us” which means “have you arose, come forth and appeared to render useless, kill and entirely abolish the evil spirits”? “I know you who you are” or “the evil spirit was aware, perceived, noticed, discerned, discovered and had knowledge of who Jesus was”; “the Holy One” which means “the most sacred, pure, morally blameless or religiously and ceremonially consecrate One” “of God” or “belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how the “unclean devils” asked Jesus whether He was going to “abolish” them because they knew He was the “sacred, pure and chosen One” of “God Almighty”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “evil spirits” recognized Jesus even though the people around the possessed man did not. These “evil spirits” knew Jesus had authority and power over them, and they understood their destiny was to be “destroyed”. They not only “knew” who Jesus was, they were aware they were in trouble if He decided they were to be “abolished”. God's power is greater than any “evil spirit” that exists, and although this “unclean devil” was more powerful than the man, He was not greater than Jesus. God loves people, and His desire is to “save” them from their “sins”. Those who are wise consider the words of the “evil spirits” within this man and realize Jesus has the authority and rule over anyone who attempts to keep them from a relationship with God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “rebuked” the unclean spirit “saying, hold your peace”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
