Physician Heal Yourself - Luke 4:23

Luke the physician shared how Jesus, came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “you will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself” where we read:

And he said unto them, You will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself:

whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in your country.

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, You will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself: Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the people within the synagogue who marveled over Him”, “you will surely say unto me” which means “you people in the synagogue of Nazareth will doubtless, certainly, truly and verily utter, declare and proclaim to Jesus” “this proverb” or “the following likeness, doctrine, precept and narrative”, “Physician” which means “one who performs miracles”, “heal your self” or “serve, cure and restore your own self”. Luke shared how Jesus told the people within the synagogue they would declare the “aphorism or maxim” to Him about “curing and restoring” Himself.

The verse goes on to say, “whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in your country.” Luke continued with the words, “whatsoever we have heard done” which means “however much and those many things the people in Nazareth's synagogue were given the faculty of hearing and perceiving that Jesus performed and made to appear” “in Capernaum” or “within the city of Capernaum which means village of comfort and was a flourishing city of Galilee situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee or Lake of Gennesaret and near the place where the Jordan flows into the lake”, “do also here in your country” which means “perform and make those same things to appear within Jesus' own territory, region and native place”. Luke shared how Jesus continued to tell the people within the synagogue in Nazareth how they desired that He perform the same “miracles” in His own “territory” like He did in the city of “Capernaum”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew the people were doubting Him because of their familiarity with Him. Jesus grew up in Nazareth, and they knew His earthly father was “Joseph”. When Jesus declared that the scriptures He read in the prophesy of Isaiah were fulfilled that day, the people marveled at Him, but they marveled with unbelief. He knew they would one day instruct Him to “heal” Himself, and even as Jesus was upon the cross, people yelled for Him to do just that. Jesus also knew people in Nazareth would desire Him to perform some sort of marvelous work like they “heard” He did in “Capernaum”, but Jesus wasn't in the world just to perform miracles. Jesus came to bring the “gospel of salvation” from sins to mankind, and although some people are familiar with Him as these people in Nazareth, they continue to doubt Him and not believe. Those who are wise will examine Jesus' words and ways and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “No prophet is accepted in his own country”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
