Down Through the Roof - Luke 5:19

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him”, and in chapter five and verse nineteen of his book Luke shares how the men, “went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling” where we read:

And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

The verse reads,And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, Luke began with the words, “and when they could not find” or “and at the time and moment the men carrying the man with palsy were unable to come upon, observe, discover or detect” “by what way they might bring him in” which means “through what way or sort the men could carry the man with palsy into the room where Jesus was located” “because of the multitude” or “since and on account of the crowd and massive collection of people”, “they went upon the housetop” which means “the men carrying the man with palsy ascended, rose and mounted the roof of the house”. Luke shared how the men carrying the man with palsy were unable to discover a way to get into the house where Jesus was teaching, so they climbed upon the roof of the house He was in.

The verse goes on to say,and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. Luke continued with the words, “and let him down” or “and lowered and sent the man with palsy down” “through the tiling” which means “by means of the roofing tile or earthenware” “with his couch” or “along with the man's pallet or little bed” “into the midst before Jesus” which means “into the middle and in front of Jesus who is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”. Luke shared how the men carrying the man with palsy lowered him down through the roofing tiles and in front of Jesus.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover the determination of these men to get the man with palsy to Jesus. Though they could not find an easy access to Jesus, these men were not to be stopped and found another way in. God loves people to be “determined” to see Him, and when they believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they not only have demonstrated their desire to know Him personally, but also receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words be as purposed and intentional as these men who carried the man with palsy to Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says to the man with palsy, “Man, your sins are forgiven you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
