Luke the physician shared how, “And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-four of his book Luke continued to share the lineage of Jesus where we read:
Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi,
which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
The verse reads, “Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, ...” Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “ who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Matthat” which means “gift of God”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Levi” which means “joined” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Melchi” which means “my king or my counsel”. Luke shared how Jesus descended from the names which mean “gift of god, joined and my king”.
The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Janna” or “flourishing”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Joseph” or “let him add”. Luke shared how Jesus also descended from the names which means “flourishing and let him add”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we begin to see qualities and benefits given by God through His Messiah as we consider their names, “gift of God, joined, my king, flourishing and let him add”. God from the beginning of mankind had a plan for their redemption because He knew people would sin against Him. Their sin separated them from a relationship with God, and God wanted them to live with Him forever. Jesus' lineage was important because the Messiah had to come through Abraham and David, and as each name is mentioned, let all who study these names realize their name is also important to God, and when they submit their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall be forgiven of their sins and inherit “everlasting life” with God.
Next time Luke continues to share the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
