Luke the physician shared how, “Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened”, and in chapter three and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how, “the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon” Jesus where we read:
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, you are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.
The verse reads, “And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, ...” Luke began with the words, “and the Holy Ghost” or “and the sacred, pure, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, who is coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son” “descended” which means “came down from an upper region to a lower state” “in a bodily shape” which means “in a corporeal physical form and nature” “like a dove upon him” or “even as it were a pigeon like dove on Jesus”, “and a voice came” which means “and a sound and tone of uttered words, speech and language arose and appeared” “from heaven” or “out of the aerial heavens or sky and the region where the clouds and the tempests gather and thunder and lightning are produced”. Luke shared how God's “Holy Spirit” came down upon Jesus in the “physical form” of a “dove” as He was baptized by John, and a “voice” proclaimed the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... which said, you are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.” Luke continued with the words, “which said” which means “that uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “you are my beloved Son” or “Jesus, you, are God the Father's esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love offspring and being”; “in you I am well pleased” which means “in you, Jesus, God the Father approved, thought good of and was approbated”. Luke shared how God the Father spoke from “heaven” and declared His approval of Jesus His only Begotten Son.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see one of the greatest scenes in the scripture as Jesus was “baptized” and God's “Spirit” came down upon Him. God's verbal declaration of His approval of His Son penetrated the sky, and all who were in His presence heard His proclamation. God's Son, Jesus, the Messiah, complied with every detail predetermined for His plan of “salvation” for mankind, and those who acknowledge Jesus in the manner He prescribed will be forgiven of their sins and receive “everlasting life” from God. Let all who read these words desire to hear God declare, in you “I am well pleased” because you believed and trusted in His Son Jesus as your personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how, “Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
