Luke the physician shared how Jesus, “full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time”, and in chapter four and verse six of his book Luke shared how the devil told Jesus, “all this power will I give you” where we read:
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them:
for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
The verse reads, “And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them:” Luke began with the words, “and the devil” or “and the slanderer, false accuser, calumniator Satan”, “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “all this power” or “absolutely and the whole authority, jurisdiction, capacity, freedom, majesty, right and strength” “will I give you” which means “will Satan grant, bestow, furnish and supply”, “and the glory of them” or “and the honor, splendor and brightness of the powers of the world”. Luke shared how Satan told Jesus he would “supply and furnish” Him with the entire “capacity and authority” of the “world's powers” along with the “honor and splendor” that comes with them.
The verse continues, “for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.” Luke added the words, “for that is delivered unto me” which means “because, since and on account that the world and it's powers are given over to Satan”; “and to whomsoever I will” or “and to whatever person Satan desires or wants” “I give it” which means “Satan grants, bestows, furnishes and supplies to them.” Luke shared how Satan told Jesus the “world” and it's “power” was “given” to him, and he was able to “grant” the power of the world over to whomsoever he desired.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Satan continued to tempt Jesus with “the lust of the eyes” as he showed Jesus the world and it's powers and told Him he could “grant” all of it to Him. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden (See Genesis 3), they delivered over the control of the world to “Satan”. God gave Adam rule over the earth, and when he and Eve sinned, they forfeited their “rites” to the world and it's powers. Satan offered Jesus the “rule” of the world, and we shall see how He responded to the devil in a few verses. Jesus overcame Satan's temptations and proved He was the “Savior and Lord” of all who will believe and trust in Him. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him by believing and trusting in His ability to rule over all mankind and the world.
Next time Luke shares how the devil tells Jesus what will happen, “if you therefore will worship me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
