The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded”, and in chapter seventeen and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven” where we read:
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven,
The verse reads, “But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, ...” Luke began with the words, “But the same day” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the exact, identical and selfsame sunrise to sunset” “that Lot went out of Sodom” which means “that Lot whose name means veil or covering and was the son of Haran and nephew to Abraham left and departed from the city of Sodom which means burning and was a city destroyed by the Lord raining fire and brimstone on it” “it rained fire and brimstone” or “it poured and sent down fiery fire and burning sulfur” “from heaven” which means “separating, departing and fleeing apart from the sky and region where the clouds and the tempests gather and where thunder and lightning are produced”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the way “fire and brimstone” fell upon the city of Sodom on the exact day that “Lot” and his family left the city. (See Genesis 19)
The verse continues, “... and destroyed them all.” Luke added the words, “and destroyed” or “and entirely abolished, put to an end to ruin, rendered useless and killed” “them all” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the other people who lived in the city of Sodom”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to how the “fire and brimstone from heaven” “abolished and killed” every one of the other people who were living in Sodom.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see another example of people who were “busy” about their normal lives when “sudden destruction” appeared and they were “destroyed”. God knows everything and everyone, and because He has the future in His view, He has warned people over and over again about the destruction that is coming. He sent His Son Jesus to “save” people from this horrific judgment, and those who yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will escape the destruction to come. Those who do not believe will be caught off guard like those within the city of Sodom, and woe be to all who suffer the same fate as they did.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
