The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me”, and after the younger son squandered everything, was destitute and feeding pigs, he returned to his home where his father began a celebration for his return. Jesus continued, “His elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. And he said unto him, Your brother is come; and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound. And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and entreated him. And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve you, neither transgressed I at any time your commandment: and yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this your son was come, which has devoured your living with harlots, you have killed for him the fatted calf. And he said unto him, Son, you are ever with me, and all that I have is yours”, and in chapter fifteen and verse thirty-two of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the father said, “your brother was dead, and is alive again” where we read:
It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad:
for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
The verse reads, “It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad:” Luke began with the words, “it was meet” or “it was necessary, right and proper” “that we should make merry” which means “that the father, his sons and his servants should be glad, joyful and delighted”, “and be glad” or “and rejoice exceedingly, hail and triumph”. Luke shared how Jesus said the father said it was “proper and right” for all those in the household to “celebrate” and “rejoice”.
The verse goes on to say, “for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.” Luke continued with the words, “for this your brother” or “because, since and on account that this younger brother” “was dead” which means “was like a person who breathed their last, without life, inactive and inoperative”, “and is alive again” or “and exists as living, revived and with vigor once again”; “and was lost” which means “and existed as rendered useless, abolished, put to an end and ruined”, “and is found” or “and exists as discovered, seen and present”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “father” told his “elder son” that his younger brother was as a “lifeless” and “rendered useless” person but was now “revived” and “present” with them again.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “father” viewed his “younger son's” return. He considered it “proper” and “right” to “celebrate” and “rejoice” because his “younger son” who was “lost” was “found” and was as a “dead” person but was “alive again”. God desires to give “life” to every person who will yield their life to His Son Jesus, and when they come to Him, they will become His “children” who are no longer “lost”, but “found” and no longer “dead”, but living.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share how Jesus said, “there was a certain rich man, which had a steward” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
