One Taken and the Other Left - Luke 17:34

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it”, and in chapter seventeen and verse thirty-four of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “one shall be taken, and the other shall be left” where we read:

I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed;

the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

The verse reads, “I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; Luke began with the words, “I tell you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to His disciples”, “in that night” which means “within that particular time when work ceases, darkness comes and it is time to slumber” “there shall be two men” or “there will exist two male human beings” “in one bed” which means “within a single couch upon which to recline”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to how “two men” will be within a single sleeping place when the following will occur.

The verse continues, “the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.” Luke added the words, “the one shall be taken” or “the certain and particular man will be accepted, not rejected and received”, “and the other” which means “and the other man” “shall be left” or “will be sent away, departed let go and disregarded”. Luke shared how Jesus said one of the men in the sleeping place would be “received and accepted” and the other would be “rejected and let go”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn another prophetic word spoken by Jesus. This time, still in the line of thinking about His sudden appearing, there will be “two men” sleeping in the same place but only one of them will be “received”. The other man will not be accepted and let go. God's desire is for all people to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” so they will be certain they will be “received” and not “rejected” by Him. Those who are wise will carefully consider Jesus' words about one man being “taken” and the other “left” and chose to believe and trust in His Son Jesus Christ.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus talks about, “two women shall be grinding together” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
