The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores, And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from there”, and in chapter sixteen and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke wrote how Jesus declared the rich man said, “I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house” where we read:
Then he said, I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house:
The verse reads, “Then he said, I pray you therefore, father, ...” Luke began with the words, “then he said” or “moreover the rich man uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I pray you therefore” which means “I, the rich man, ask, request of, entreat, beg and beseech you, Father Abraham, wherefore and on this account and consequently”, “father” or “male progenitor and ancestor”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “rich man” responded to Abraham by addressing him as “father” and saying the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... that you would send him to my father's house:” Luke continued with the words, “that you would send him” or “that, Father Abraham, would dispatch Lazarus” “to my father's house” which means “to the rich man's immediate male progenitor and ancestor's dwelling place, abode and habitation”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “rich man” wanted “Father Abraham” to “dispatch” Lazarus to his “father's home”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “rich man” began to be concerned for his own family after he knew he could not be helped himself. Those who are in “hell” have great concern for those who continue to live and do not know Jesus Christ as their “Savior and Lord”. Jesus was sent by His Father God to die on the cross for the sins of the world. Those who believe and trust in Him will be “saved” from their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Those who do not will spend eternity separated from God without hope for ever being redeemed or being able to help their families from following their fate.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus spoke about the rich man's concern for his, “five brothers” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
